What is Growth Mindset?
“This growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts. Although people may differ in every which way – in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments – everyone can change and grow through application and experience. |
There are two different views in regards to intelligence and learning. These include the fixed mindset, and the growth mindset. When one has a fixed mindset, they believe that people only have a fixed amount of intelligence that can not be changed or altered with effort. This approach to learning can be problematic for students later down the road in their educational careers. When one has a growth mindset, they believe that their intelligence and abilities can be expanded upon with effort. In schools, we strive to demonstrate and push the growth mindset. This is because the growth mindset allows students to learn more and feel confident in their ability to do so. In my classroom, instead of saying, "Wow what a great test score, you are so smart!" I say, "Wow what a great test score! You must have worked very hard to get that grade!" I encourage you to use this same type of praise at home with your child, because it insists that there is always more that one can learn with added effort. I feel strongly about using the growth mindset in my classroom, and I hope you are now able to understand why! Let's keep learning!
